Directed by: Mel Gibson

Starring: Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving

While there is no shortage of War Movies, especially WW2 Movies few are as brutal as Hacksaw Ridge.
The film tells the true(ish) life events of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who after giving his brother a good hiding as a kid becomes a pacifist, despite this he enlists in the US Army during the height of the war against Japan to become a Medic but is adamant he will not carry or fire a gun. A Braver man than I.

The 1st half of the film focuses on Desmonds struggles during boot camp where he is continuosly derided by his superiors and his fellow recruits who feel he is and will be a liability. It is in these struggles and the brutality that he has to endure that you realise just how inspiritional Desmond and his story are, to stick by your beliefs in the face of such hostility.

If the 1st half of the Movie was brutal the 2nd half resembles a Horror Movie on Steroids for it’s brutality. After getting through training Doss is sent to fight with the 77th Infantry Division in Okinawa. What follows is the depiction of one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific. This is where the blood and gore get ramped up to 11 by Gibson, and it is epic. With soldiers dropping left and right Doss still does not pick up a weapon and manages to save many of his fallen comrades by going back into the battlefield time and again.

Before the final credits roll it is stated tgat Doss saved 75 Servicemen during the Battle for Okinawa and was awarded the Medal of Honor, the first time it was awarded to a conscientious objector.

Mel Gibson may be a bit bat shit crazy these days, but boy can he still make a bloody good movie.
